Christchurch is the largest city in New Zealand’s South Island. The city, and the wider region of Canterbury, is exhilarating, relaxing, quaint and sophisticated all at once.
New Zealand is all about nature and the outdoors. Christchurch’s iconic contributions include biking or driving along the Summit Road for fantastic views of the city, punting on the Avon River, soaring above valleys in The Gondola and a visit to the Botanic Gardens (Christchurch is actually known as ‘The Garden City!) Meet the native fauna at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve where there is a kiwi breeding program.
Just 20 minutes from the city centre, over a hill, is the cute and colourful port town Lyttelton. It’s home to a community of bohemian artists, cafes, shops and restaurants. There’s also a great Antarctic gallery and lovely harbour cruises from which you might spot some dolphins!
A cultural highlight is Canterbury Museum for stunning gothic architecture that houses wonderful Maori collections and the world’s premier exhibition of artefacts from the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
There’s plenty more to see and do in this delightful city, including farmers’ markets, golf, short walks and hikes, skiing and wine trails!
