Hikes You May Not Have Heard Of

Looking for a new way to explore the world? Hiking gives you a whole different perspective - one foot in front of the other, fresh air in your lungs and the kind of views that don’t come with crowds. It's also a great way to challenge yourself, get moving and discover places that feel like your own personal secret. So, grab your hiking boots and check out these lesser-known trails that are packed with scenery, stories and a bit of adventure.

The Fisherman’s Trail, Portugal

This coastal gem in southern Portugal is one of the most scenic seaside walks out there. Take in the rugged cliffs, rolling surf and quiet beaches. Just you, the sea breeze and the sound of waves. The full trail runs for 226.5km from São Torpes to Lagos, taking around 11 to 13 days to complete. Not keen on walking that far? No worries. The 76km stretch from Porto Covo to Odeceixe is a great four-day hike with all the coastal charm and less commitment.

Cammino Retico, Italy

Want mountains, medieval towns and a hint of history? This one’s for you. The Cammino Retico is a 191km trail that winds through the mountain regions of Veneto and Trentino. It takes about seven to eight days and links 10 remote villages with alpine lakes, forest paths, and cultural landmarks. Along the way, stop at the Pedavena Brewery for a cold one - it’s been around since 1897 and is the perfect place to rest your legs.

Waitukubuli National Trail, Dominica

Welcome to the Caribbean’s first long-distance hiking route. The Waitukubuli National Trail covers 185km across the lush island of Dominica, from Scott’s Head in the south to Cabrits National Park in the north. Despite the island’s small size (just 750km²), the trail takes you through a world of changing landscapes - tropical jungle, volcanic peaks, coastal cliffs and coral reefs. Dominica is known as the 'Jurassic Park of the Caribbean' for good reason as it’s home to nine active volcanoes and feels like a lost world waiting to be discovered.

Otter Trail, South Africa

Tucked within South Africa’s Garden Route National Park, the Otter Trail is a five-day, 42km trek that’s as rewarding as it is rugged. It traces the shoreline where the Tsitsikamma Forest meets the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, mostly following cliff tops 150 metres above sea level, before dipping down for river crossings. Keep your eyes peeled as you might spot dolphins or even whales from the cliffs above. Due to environmental protection efforts, permits for this hike are limited, so be sure to book well in advance. It’s challenging, beautiful and worth every step.

Pekoe Trail, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s first long-distance hiking trail, the Pekoe Trail, offers more than 300km of scenic beauty and cultural depth. Winding through tea plantations, remote villages and misty forests, it tells the story of the island’s rich tea-growing legacy. The trail is divided into 22 stages and starts near Kandy, where Scotsman James Taylor first planted Ceylon tea in the 1800s. The central highlands offer ever-changing weather but constant lush green hills, historic estates and the chance to sip world-renowned tea right where it’s grown.
