Top 7 things to do in Fiji

Top 7 things to do in Fiji

20 Apr 2018 Couples, Family, Travel Tips

Whether you're looking to soak up the sun on white sandy beaches or explore majestic limestone caves - the beautiful Fijian islands have just the activities for you. Below is just a taste of what you can do when visting Fiji.

Explore the breathtaking Colo-i-Suva Forest Park

You'll need to pass through Viti Levu to access all of Fiji, but don't make the mistake of writing this island off as an unavoidable transit stop. Viti Levu has plenty to offer and the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park is a prime example.

Nestled in the South Pacific sultry town of Suva is a lush forest sanctuary full of tropical wildlife, vibrant plants and natural pools. The Colo-i-Suva Forest Park is lined with walking trails that lead the way to watering holes and one-of-a-kind views. As you make your way down the Waisila Creek you'll land along the Waimanu River path - make sure to enjoy the swimming holes that will sprout up on your journey!

Grab some local produce at the Suva Municipal Market

Unlike the tranquil backdrop of Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, the Suva Municipal Market is teeming with noisy delivery boys and the excited chatter of market-goers. Located at the heart of Suva, this market offers all the fresh produce your heart (or rumbling tummy) could desire.

Try some of the local flavours like the bitter gourds, jackfruit, dalo (taro), cassava and yams - they're cheaper than store produce and yummier too.

Surf the famous Cloudbreak on the Mamanuca Islands

Surfing enthusiasts - get ready for the wave of a lifetime. Travelling to Fiji means you can visit one the top 10 left hand breaks in the world. Cloudbreak, also known as Thundercloud Reef, is a tropical reef break on the Mamanuca Islands and home to the annual World Surfing League 'Fiji Pro' competition.

The wave is admired by surfers worldwide for its power, hollowness, length and ability to hold big swells (translation: all around awesomeness). According to Australian pro-surfer Taj Burrow, Cloudbreak really is the stuff of dreams.

"It's one of the best waves in the world because every wave has so much to offer, from tubes to turns, from four feet up to 20 feet," says Taj. "I don't think many people are aware of how good it is. It's kind of under the radar when people talk about the top five waves in the world. It's one of the best waves on the planet."

Take a break from the hustle and bustle on the Yasawa Islands

Just north of the Mamanucas lie the stunning Yasawa Islands. Once upon a time, these islands were forbidden to tourists - a ban that was eventually lifted in the 1950s. Today the island boasts a pristine beauty and remains free of the tourist vibe. What the island lacks in shops and modern banks, it makes up for in untouched beaches and unfiltered sunshine.

One of the must-do activities on the island: visiting the Sawailau Caves. These limestone formations hidden within the island's blue lagoon are sure to wow. According to ancient legends, this cave was once used as a hiding spot for the beloved of a young Fijian chief. Rumour has it he hid her there to avoid her being married off to a rival chief! For more folk tales like this, take a guided tour of the caves.

Visit the colourful Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple in Nadi

If you're a lover of colours, the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple in Nadi won't disappoint. Painted in bright blues, playful reds, funky greens and everything in between - this is a stop you won't want to miss.

The temple provides one of the few examples of traditional Dravidian architecture outside of India. If that's not enough to draw you in, the impressive frescos adorning the ceilings will surely grab your attention. You'll need to dress modestly for your visit and remove your shoes at the entrance, but this unique temple is certainly worth the trip.

Have a shopping spree at the Port at Denarau

Need a break from sightseeing and beachside lounging? Treat yourself to some high-end shopping and delectable food via Port at Denarau. Open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, the port is home to all sorts of activities.

From lively bars to world-class spas to land, sea and air activities suitable for all age groups, there is truly something for everyone at this local hot spot.

Investigate the unforgettable Great Astrolabe Reef on the Kadavu Island

Located an easy 100 km from Viti Levu, Kadavu is a slice of pure, untouched Fiji. With only one town - the petite Vunisea - this area gives you an authentic Fijian experience. We're sure you'll want to soak up the sun on the long stretches of white sandy beaches but don't forget to make time for diving in the Great Astrolabe Reef.

The world's fourth longest barrier reef, Astrolabe consists of 75 miles of pristine hard and soft corals. There are heaps of extensive sheltered coral lagoons where you can wander to watch colourful schools of fish shimmer by. The best part about the Astrolabe is that it has largely been forgotten by tourists - leaving the reef untouched and unbelievably beautiful.
