A blend of exciting cultures, ancient landscapes and natural wonderlands, South East Asia holidays give you the chance to tailor your holiday itinerary in a variety of ways. For those who love shopping, South East Asia has a wealth of shopping centres, malls and markets to explore and many are an essential part of each country’s culture.
Floating Markets, Bangkok
If any of your South East Asia holidays involve a stint in Thailand, the Floating Markets in Bangkok are definitely a must-visit! These markets are actually boats filled with local food, like fruit, vegetables and seafood, and provide travellers with a true sense of how things once operated in Thailand. Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa are the best known floating markets in the area and are easily accessible by tour (both are around one hour’s drive from Bangkok). Other floating markets closer to the city include Taling Chan, Khlong Lat Mayom and Bang Nam Phueng and all are worth a look, even if you’re only in Bangkok for a short amount of time.
Kowloon, Hong Kong
One of the most popular areas of Hong Kong, Kowloon is a buzzing hot spot that’s on the go nearly 24 hours a day. The shopping along Nathan Road is one of the most famous aspects of this small country and shoppers can find anything from clothes, shoes and handbags to electronic goods, photography equipment, toys, jewellery, hand-made crafts and more. While street-side stores are easy to find, keep an eye out for the larger shopping malls. The Temple Street Night Markets should also be on your shopping itinerary!
ION Orchard, Singapore
One of the best benefits of a South East Asia holiday is the opportunity to pick up luxury goods at bargain prices. The futuristic ION Orchard shopping mall in Singapore, located next to the Orchard MRT, houses products from some of the world’s most prestigious brands including Armani, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana. Enthusiastic shoppers will love the 8 floors and 5km of indulgence shopping offering clothes, bags, accessories, jewellery, fragrances and more. The best way to finish off the day at the Orchard is to head to one of the centre’s relaxing restaurants or bars.
Ben Thanh Market, Ho Chi Minh
If your South East Asia holiday is all about Vietnam, the Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City offers a wealth of handcrafted goods and Vietnamese souvenirs for the tourist visitor. Located in District 1 and situated in one of the oldest buildings in the Saigon district, the market is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s biggest and most popular bargain shopping hotspots. It can get a little hot and crowded here, so the best time to visit the market is early in the morning or later on in the afternoon. In the evening, local eateries also open up around the market, creating a vibrant, night atmosphere and a great place to both shop and eat!
