Want a gorgeous glimpse of America? Or wondering what to include in your America holiday package? Self drive holidays are one of the most rewarding ways to explore the USA and there are plenty of roads to help you do it! Here are some of the most captivating and scenic routes to discover:

1. Big Sur, California

One of west coast’s most renowned driving attractions, Big Sur winds its way along the state’s central coast and offers breath-taking views of California’s natural surroundings. Wildlife, mountains, waterfalls, coastlines and beaches can all be discovered on the Big Sur drive and travellers can choose to stop-over in various destinations (such as one of the state parks) or simply drive the route all in one go before heading further north to Half Moon Bay or San Francisco.

2. San Juan Skyway, Colorado

Looping for 375km through south west Colorado, the San Juan Skyway is a self drive holiday favourite. While the hairpin turns can seem a little daunting, it’s worth it for the scenic mountain vistas this drive brings. The San Juan Mountains, Lizard Head Peak and Red Mountain are all popular stop-off points on the San Juan route and even ancient Native American ruins and hot springs can be discovered along the way.

3. White Rim Trail, Utah

If you adore the idea of a self drive holiday through the American outback, Utah is spectacular. Rust-coloured terrain, sweeping canyons and desert plateaus are all on offer on the 100-mile (160km) White Rim Trail. It’s definitely one of the more challenging American drives, taking 3-4 days to complete and marked by the National Park Service as “moderately difficult for high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles.” If getting to know the desert is on your agenda, though, definitely add this drive to your America holiday package! Stopping off along the way at the Canyonlands National Park is a must.

4. Road to Hana, Hawaii

You often don’t think of self drive holidays when heading to Hawaii, but the Road to Hana (or the Hana Highway) may just change your mind! This road stretches for just over 100km from Kahului to Hana and will take drivers through some of the country’s most alluring tropical rainforests and breath-taking coasts and beaches. The Road to Hana will definitely add a beautiful touch to your America holiday package and it’s a great chance to take a break from the touristy hot spots of Honolulu and discover the natural beauty Hawaii has to offer.

5. Denali Highway, Alaska

Also referred to as “Alaska Route 8,” the Denali Highway is one of the world’s most captivating destinations for self drive holidays in America. Known for taking travellers through the untouched beauty of Alaska, this 217km route will introduce you to dazzling vistas, including gorgeous, close-up views of Mount McKinley and Denali Park. Accommodation is available along the way and lucky tourists may be able to spot Alaskan wildlife, such as moose, grizzly bears, reindeer and wolves.
