America plays host to some of the most watched sports in the world and New York plays host to some of the best and most recognised sporting teams such as the Knicks, Yankees, Giants and Rangers. Covering sports such as NFL, basketball, baseball and ice hockey. However with different season start and end dates, it can be quite tricky to get to the big apple and experience as much of their sporting culture as possible. NFL or Gridiron (Known as Football in the United States)
The NY Giants play their first home game on September 14th 2014 against the Atlanta Falcons. The season runs every week in 2014 from September 8th up to the 28th of December. The NY Giants home ground is MetLife Stadium which is located about 30-45 minutes west of Manhattan. The NY Giants have had a strong couple of seasons over the past few years however have fell short of winning the championship. NFL games run for just over 3 hours, but it is an American sport you can’t miss.
The NBA season comes to an end in June 2014, with the final game of the playoffs being on Friday 20th June, if all games are required. The season starts again in late October and runs through the Christmas and New Year’s period, similarly to the NFL season. The local New York basketball team is the New York Knicks, there team colours are orange and blue and their home stadium is Madison Square Gardens. The Knicks came 3rd in the Atlantic Division however failed to make the playoffs this year. Basketball in America has an electrifying atmosphere that doesn’t stop throughout the game. The length of a Basketball game is around 2.5 hours long with lots of entertainment between quarters to keep the crowd excited. Madison Square Gardens is located just South of Time Square and takes about 10 minutes to walk.
If you’re looking for something different then head to an Ice Hockey game, this can also be seen at Madison Square Gardens. The local team is the New York Rangers and are competing in the Stanley Cup finals of the 2014 playoffs. The 2014/15 season starts again in October and is a unique experience not to be missed.
